InDesign Magazine Cover Reflection
This week, we learned the convention of magazine covers through in class slides and filling out a magazine cover with the conventions we saw. Using the notes we took, I planned to make a travel magazine using a picture I took last Spring Break in Jamaica. Learning about magazine conventions interested me because as a kid I always saw these big overcrowded magazines and didn't really realize that the headlines on them meant more than just weird celebrity gossip or tips for a random topic.
This was the first draft of my cover without headlines. To match the genre I chose, I decided to make a more modern-looking cover with less headlines and colors that complimented the photo, with design elements that were thin and light. This photo really resonated with me because it had a destination on the ball, and could act as a large subject explaining the magazine. I decided to use a single puff, strip, and box to keep the coverlines and feature article small with low opacity backgrounds to allow for sight of the cover photo. I also decided to cutout the ball over the masthead to make a layering effect. I had to use Canva to make the image and import it, just like for my barcode. When deciding my feature article, I originally had it in my strip. After realizing the strip is used for additional lines, I had to make my puff larger and the text in it bigger for my final feature article. Other than that, InDesign was really smooth for me and allowed for a lot of creative freedom from outside sources, like Canva for my cutouts.
By the end of this project, I've learned a lot about magazine covers and conventions and how they tie to a magazines marketing and intrigue. Including major stories that may include even gossip contributes to a magazine's profitability. The design of these also matters too, creativity playing a major part in how magazine as a media form performs in markets. This will help me a lot in my portfolio, especially my brief as I have learned a lot about how InDesign works and how to include magazines' conventions.
Below is my final submission!
